We’ve come to the Iberostar Waves Málaga , one of the best-reviewed upper-mid-range family hotels in Andalusia. It’s in Torrox, on the Málaga coast, and we picked it because we wanted to see whether it really lives up to those ratings or whether the reviews are a bit inflated.

We paid nearly 300 euros a night in early June to test it from the inside and show you the rooms, the pools, the food, the all-inclusive, the beach and, most importantly, whether it’s actually worth it compared to other family hotels at the same price.

And I’ll give you a heads-up now: it’s been one of the most surprising hotels we’ve stayed at this year.

My quick verdict

We give it an 8.7 out of 10 . The overall feeling is that it’s a hotel that’s very well thought-out for families with young children, with an all-inclusive that’s the real deal — no fine print — and a buffet that’s well above what you’d expect from a four-star family hotel.

The staff are some of the friendliest we’ve come across , the beach is right there, and the kids’ facilities have way more activities than you’d normally find at hotels of this type.

The only thing that pulls the score down a bit are the pillows, which don’t match the standard of the rest of the hotel.

In one sentence

One of the best family hotels in Spain for kids up to 7 or 8, with food that surprises you and an all-inclusive that doesn’t make you feel like you’ve overpaid.

Pros and Cons

The good

  • Buffet and food: one of the best we’ve tried at four-star family hotels. Homemade pizzas, oxtail, good beef, crispy croissants.
  • Honest all-inclusive: ice cream cones, waffles with syrup, espresso coffees, cocktails. No fine print or hidden surcharges.
  • Lovely staff: pretty much the whole team brings a positive vibe. Special mention to Judith, Teresa and Ángela.
  • Gradual-entry pool: ideal for young children. Loads of sunbeds and garden areas if you want a bit more peace and quiet.
  • Beach right there: you walk straight out to the promenade and you’re on the sand in no time.

The bad

  • Pillows below the hotel’s standard: they’re fine, but at a hotel with this quality of food and facilities, they should be much better.
  • Slow plate clearing at late mealtimes: plates piled up on our table during one lunch. We went in fairly late and the staff were focused on closing down buffet sections.
  • Limited evening entertainment for kids: after the main show, around 10-10:30 pm, there isn’t much else for the little ones.
  • Apartment views: ours looked onto an internal courtyard, not the pool or the sea. The ones facing the sea are prettier.

Check if today's price makes it worth it

The Iberostar Waves Málaga could be the perfect family hotel for your holiday if you find it at the right price. But that price changes every month. Check it in 10 seconds before deciding.

Location and atmosphere

The hotel is in Torrox , on the Málaga coast, an area that’s very focused on family tourism, particularly German family tourism.

It’s not a party hotel and it’s not noisy. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a fairly quiet crowd , and it’s designed for families with young children. It’s right next to the seafront promenade and the beach, so the location is spot on if you want to combine pool, beach and rest without needing a car.

Look and feel & first impressions

The hotel is really attractive inside and out . You can tell they’ve made an effort with the aesthetics: spacious areas, open spaces, large lamps, nice cafés, huge sofas, thoughtful decor and an overall feel of an upscale hotel .

It’s not a massive resort like others we’ve visited, but it packs a lot of well-used facilities into its footprint and the general sensation is one of space and comfort.

The room and bathroom

Apartment

We booked an apartment, although you can also book rooms or studios. We went for the apartment because we think it’s the most family-friendly option : more space, more flexibility and you appreciate it if you come with kids.

It’s very spacious and functional. It has a separate bedroom, a large living room, kitchen, bathroom, terrace and two Smart TVs — really handy if you’re with kids and want to put a film on at night.

You probably won’t use the kitchen much if you’re on the all-inclusive plan, because one of the hotel’s strong points is the food. But if you come with babies and need to warm up milk or prepare something quickly, having it there is a real plus.

The terrace is pleasant. In our case it didn’t look onto the pool or the sea, but rather onto a square or internal courtyard. The views weren’t bad, but the rooms facing the pool or the sea are probably visually prettier .

Bathroom

The bathroom is really good . It has a huge shower, modern design, good cleanliness and a fairly premium feel. We also liked that the air conditioning is integrated into the ceiling and is quite quiet.

Bed and pillows

The bed is fine. You sleep well.

But the pillows are, for me, something that needs improving . They’re OK, but nothing more. At a hotel of this level, with this quality of food, facilities and service, the pillows can’t lag so far behind the rest .

Food: breakfast, lunch and dinner

The food was one of the big surprises of the hotel. For me, it’s one of the best buffets we’ve tried at four-star family hotels in Spain . Not just this year, but in general.

It’s a very varied buffet, with good quality, clean, and with genuinely friendly service.

Breakfast

Breakfast is really good across the board. There’s lots of variety, good quality produce, and several things you don’t always see at family hotels.

You get soft pastries, really good croissants, even smoked salmon and fruit smoothies , plus sweet and savoury options, fruit, breads and a fairly wide selection.

We especially liked the pastries because they didn’t taste dry or mass-produced. The croissant was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Lunch and dinner

Lunch and dinner are also at a very high level . There’s a wide range of dishes, meats, fish, desserts and plates you don’t always see at this type of hotel.

We found dishes like oxtail, good beef steaks, salmon and homemade pizzas with freshly prepared dough, good ingredients and plenty of flavour. In fact, they’re the kind of thing you try once and end up going back for more.

The desserts reminded us of the ones you find in gourmet coffee shops.

Don't miss the pizzas

The pizzas really surprised us. Freshly made dough, good ingredients and bags of flavour. One of the buffet highlights along with the oxtail.

The only thing we’d improve is that during one lunch plates started piling up on our table . To be fair, we went in quite late, we were sitting off to one side and there weren’t many diners left, so the staff were more focused on clearing and closing the buffet sections.

But that detail aside, we thought the food was at an incredibly high level for a family hotel .

All-inclusive

I’ve got to say this loud and clear: this is a genuinely honest all-inclusive .

At so many hotels you choose all-inclusive and then you start running into phrases like “that’s not included”, “that has a surcharge”, “this ice cream isn’t covered”, “this coffee is charged separately”. Here we didn’t get that feeling at all .

You’ve got several bars, beach bars and areas where you can order pretty much everything as part of the all-inclusive: ice cream cones like from an ice cream parlour, waffles with syrup, proper espresso coffees, sweet and savoury snacks, drinks, cocktails, beers and soft drinks.

An honest all-inclusive

This makes a huge difference because it makes you feel like you’ve paid for something fair, not for a “nearly all-inclusive”. It’s, without a doubt, one of the hotel’s strongest points.

Pool and common areas

The main pool is probably the most beautiful part of the hotel. It has a gradual ramp entry like a beach , ideal for young children, where they can play without the water being too deep right from the start. The pool then gets deeper and has a wider area for swimming, playing and being together as a family.

It’s a family pool, so you’re going to see kids playing, jumping and moving around. But even so, the atmosphere didn’t feel overwhelming . There are loads of sunbeds, both on the paved areas and in the garden areas surrounding the pool.

If you want a bit more peace, you can move away from the main area and settle on the grass or in one of the more tucked-away sunbeds.

Kids’ area and activities

The hotel also has a fairly comprehensive kids’ area . There’s a sort of outdoor kids’ club with a mini water park, a very shallow pool for small children and an outdoor playground. This area is designed for kids up to about 7 or 8 years old .

The entertainment team is very present during the day and they run a lot of activities. Some even overlap, so the kids can choose what to do. For example, there might be a kids’ bingo in one area and at the same time an aqua-basketball activity in another.

That’s something we really liked, because you can tell it’s not just “there’s one activity a day and that’s it” — they genuinely try to keep the kids entertained .

On top of the pool and the mini water park, there are several play areas around: volleyball nets, ping pong tables, racket activities and games organised by the entertainment team. They also run tournaments and activities like rifle shooting, aqua-basketball, kids’ games and family activities.

It’s not a hotel with giant waterslides, but it has lots of little things to keep the kids busy throughout the day .

What's today's price?

The Iberostar Waves Málaga really shines if you’re after a family hotel with good food and a beach. But every month has a different price tag. Check what it costs for your exact dates and decide without relying on me.

Indoor pool and spa

The hotel also has an indoor pool in the spa area , and the good news is that access is free . The water is warm and it tends to be quieter than the outdoor pool. Kids are allowed in too, but there’s usually less movement, so it’s a good option if you fancy a more relaxed dip.

There’s also a sauna, though we didn’t use it. As an extra, it adds a fair bit of value .

The beach

The beach is right in front . You walk out through a door that goes directly onto the seafront promenade and you’re on the beach in no time.

The atmosphere is family-friendly and relaxed. It’s not a party beach bar or nightclub area — it’s a more laid-back zone, with hotel guests, families, locals and a promenade vibe.

The sand is a mix of pebbly patches and sandier bits. It’s not the classic fine-sand beach , but it’s pleasant. The water was clear and a nice temperature — not cold, really quite enjoyable for a swim.

Facilities for adults

Even though the hotel is heavily family-focused, it’s still pretty good for adults.

It has a very complete and fairly new gym , where you can train practically every muscle group. It’s next to the spa and indoor pool area.

There are also several cafés and bars: one by the pool, another between the pool and the lobby, and another in the main lobby. During the day they run a few activities for adults like yoga, stretching or gentle games.

At night we saw an Il Divo-style musical show , and we really enjoyed it. It wasn’t the typical half-hearted live music you get at hotels — it was a proper show with three professional singers and good sound quality.

Facilities for kids

For children, the hotel is really good , especially if they’re up to about 7 or 8 years old.

You’ve got the mini water park, the shallow pool, the outdoor playground, activities, kids’ club, ping pong, games and daytime entertainment.

There are also some activities in the evening. That said, after the main show, which usually finishes around 10:00 or 10:30 pm, there isn’t a huge amount more for kids . From there on, the plan is more relaxed: grab a drink on the terrace, spend time with the family and wind down.

Staff

The staff were one of the hotel’s strongest points .

And not just in one particular area. At reception, the café, entertainment, lifeguards, bars and the ice cream truck, we were treated really well. I’d especially highlight Judith, in the café , Teresa, at the ice cream area and Ángela, in entertainment .

That’s what you hope for on holiday: friendly people, good vibes and being made to feel welcome. Here the hotel pulls off something you don’t always see: pretty much the entire staff brings a genuinely positive attitude .

What kind of traveller is this hotel for?

  • Families with young kids up to 7 or 8 who want a hotel with good food, a pool designed for little ones and a ton of activities.
  • Couples with children who want an honest all-inclusive, with no fine print, where you don’t feel ripped off by extras.
  • Older travellers looking for a quiet hotel, right by the beach, with a good atmosphere but no noise or partying.
