We paid €327 (about $400 USD) per night to find out whether it’s possible to combine the adrenaline of water slides with the peace of a luxury resort. My final score is an 8.8/10 , and I’ll tell you right now: the food was the biggest surprise of the entire trip.

Don’t picture one of those “family resorts” where chaos reigns, noise is everywhere and the pools are packed; wipe that image from your mind. The Wyndham Alltra plays in a different league.

The moment you set foot in the lobby, you realise the experience is going to be different: the reception smells incredible . It’s a subtle detail, but that scent and its impeccable architecture flip a switch instantly: you’re in a luxury resort.

My quick verdict

We give it an 8.8 out of 10 . I’ll be honest with you: the Wyndham Alltra surprised me. It’s a family-focused hotel, yes, but the design is so clever it feels like an “Adults Only” .

Why? Because the water park and all the noise are in a separate area at the back. This leaves the main area and the “infinity” pool in absolute peace. It’s ideal if you’re travelling as a couple but don’t want to pay the premium of an adults-only hotel, or if you’re a family that wants moments of fun and moments of real calm .

On top of that, the food was the biggest surprise of the trip . Despite being low season (there were barely 50 of us), they didn’t drop the quality at all. That says a lot about the hotel’s management — they won’t sacrifice quality even if it costs them money.

In a sentence

A family resort with such clever design it feels like an adults-only hotel , top-tier food and a water park that doesn’t disappoint.

Pros and Cons

The good

  • The buffet’s “Rib Eye”: the best meat I’ve had at a buffet in Punta Cana, beating many à la carte restaurants.
  • ”Flexible” water park: they let you go down the slides with your child (even the small ones).
  • Pizzas and desserts: wood-fired pizzas and fine confectionery desserts.
  • The Uber trick: Uber does come into the hotel and it’s cheaper.

The bad

  • Heat at “La Brasa”: the steakhouse restaurant has poor air conditioning.
  • Room size: tight if you’re travelling as a family with lots of luggage.
  • Snack bar hours: the water park bar closes before the slides do.

The Wyndham Alltra Punta Cana can be a brilliant getaway. But prices change every month. Check in 10 seconds before you decide.

The water park

This is the Wyndham Alltra’s big secret. Being located at the back of the hotel, it concentrates all the noise and fun there, leaving the rest of the resort in peace.

It’s modern, compact and great fun for all ages, but I have to give you a couple of tips so you don’t have the same experience I did :

  • The Red Slide (El Rápido): it’s pure speed. Golden tip: wear a lycra or swimsuit shirt . The slide joints are noticeable when you’re going that fast and, if your back is bare, you can end up with a few scratches. With a shirt on, zero problems.
  • Donut Slides: my favourites. They have single and double floats, perfect for going down as a couple or with your child .
  • Lazy River: quite long and very relaxing for just letting the current carry you after the adrenaline.
  • Kids’ Zone: they have a mini park with a shallow pool, small slides and the classic tipping water bucket.

The best part: the flexibility. Here they let you go down the slides with your child (even the small ones if they’re scared to go alone), something other hotels strictly forbid.

The kilometre-long pool

It’s so long that it takes between 5 and 10 minutes to swim its full length.

This is great because you never feel crowded; there’s always a free corner for you. It has a swim-up bar to grab a drink without leaving the water and the atmosphere is very elegant. Since the kids tend to be at the back with the slides, this area stays surprisingly peaceful.

Gastronomy

This is where the hotel won me over, especially considering I went during low season (barely 50 guests) and they still maintained top quality.

  • The buffet and the rib eye: it was incredible. They have a Rib Eye at the dinner buffet that’s better than what many à la carte restaurants serve at other hotels. Tender, flavourful… I went back for seconds several times.
  • Wood-fired pizzas: no frozen pizzas here. They have a proper wood-fired oven and the dough is really well made.
  • Confectionery desserts: I have a sweet tooth, and I promised myself I wouldn’t eat dessert… but I ended up having three. The quality is like fine patisserie , not your typical industrial buffet cake.
  • “La Brasa” restaurant (Steakhouse): the food is good, but I found one thing to improve: it gets hot . The air conditioning is weak and you miss more ventilation or a breeze for a comfortable dinner.

Coffee shop and Sports Bar (special mention)

  • Sports Bar: probably the best decorated I’ve seen in Punta Cana. You genuinely feel like you’re in an American sports bar , with pool tables, loads of TVs and excellent service.
  • Lobby coffee shop: very handy. Quality coffee and a variety of snacks (both sweet and savoury) for a quick bite.

The room and bathroom

The rooms have been renovated and you can feel the modern touch, although the bathroom looks slightly less new than the rest.

The good: the beds. They’re incredibly comfortable, the kind that trap you in.

What could improve: the space. If you’re travelling as a family with lots of luggage, the room can feel a bit tight . It’s not dramatic, but if you’re the type to unpack everything, you’ll need to organise yourselves well.

Staff

The staff came across as very friendly and helpful . They were attentive at all times. We especially want to highlight the service at the Sports Bar, which was excellent.

It’s for you if:

  • You’re looking for a family hotel that’s still elegant , where it doesn’t feel like you’re in a giant nursery.
  • You really value food quality (especially meats, pizzas and desserts). The standard here doesn’t drop, even in low season.
  • You want water slides for your kids (or for yourself) but also a massive pool to swim laps in peace.

It’s NOT for you if:

  • You need a massive room to spread out with all your luggage.
  • You run warm and can’t stand dining without powerful air conditioning (you’ll sweat at “La Brasa”).
  • You’re looking for a kilometre-long beach with plenty of natural shade (shade is a bit scarce in this area).
