All-Inclusive Resorts in Punta Cana: 21 Ranked From 9.4 to 6.7 (I Paid for 20)
I’ve slept in 21 all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana across two trips, October 2025 and July 2026. I paid for 20 of them myself. The list used to say 14. It says 21 now, and it will keep growing.
Every resort below gets a score out of 10 that I gave it after sleeping there, with my own money on the line. They run from 9.4 down to 6.7, and the low ones are the reason you can trust the high ones.
The order is the ranking. Straight by score, best first. Where two resorts tie, the cheaper one goes first, because at the same score your money decides.
Prices are what I actually paid per night, converted at roughly $1.15 to the euro. Low season in both cases, so treat them as a floor, not a quote. In December to April the same rooms cost a lot more.
And because twenty-one is a lot to read, right below there’s a filter by the kind of trip you’re taking. Tap yours and the list drops to the ones that actually fit.

- Shaded swim-up bar, so you don’t cook while you order
- Playa Juanillo, white sand that doesn’t burn your feet
- Your wristband gets you into the Hyatt Ziva next door too
CONS
- $600 a night in low season. Double or triple in high
- The Blind Butcher isn’t included: about $145 a head
- Zero nightlife. Wrong hotel if you want a party
- Some showers spray outside the screen
- The spa wouldn’t let us in, so I can’t rate it
What it’s actually like
I’ve stayed in $400 and $500 resorts and seen the difference between tiers. This is the first time I felt I was in a different category altogether. You’re not paying for the brand, you’re paying for everything at once.
Concrete example: we asked for a cocktail we knew from a bar in Madrid, triple sec with passion fruit and amaretto. They made it. Not off a menu, just made it. That happened repeatedly.
Check-in is done sitting down with a drink. Bar spirits are Bacardí, Hendrick’s, Jägermeister. Even the standard room faces gardens, the resort or the sea, never the back of the building.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it for a honeymoon, an anniversary, or if you simply want the safest bet in Punta Cana and can pay for it. Skip it if you want nightlife or value: at half the price, Dreams Royal Beach gets you most of the way there. And if you’re travelling with kids, book the Hyatt Ziva instead, the family half of the same complex.
Breathless Punta Cana Foam party and total silence, five minutes apart

- Antonio at the pasta station cooks off-menu if you ask
- Almost every room has a hot tub on the terrace
- Connected indoors to Dreams Onyx: its water park included, 2 min away
CONS
- No smoked salmon at breakfast, at this price
- First fill of the terrace tub brings out dead leaves. Drain and refill
- 40 minutes from the airport, not 20
- The gym is fine for cardio and short on leg machines
What it’s actually like
It sells itself as a 24/7 party and that’s only half true. The two atmospheres are genuinely separate places, so you can go from a foam party to reading in silence without leaving the resort.
The crowd is a healthy mix of couples and groups of friends. It feels like a club with good energy and none of the trouble. The main bar has a wall of proper bottles, the best-looking bar I saw across all 21.
Ask for the ground-floor rooms with semi-private pool access. They exist and you have to request them.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if you want to go out without leaving the hotel, and eat well doing it. Skip it if you want absolute silence 24 hours a day, which is Meliá Punta Cana Beach, or if loud music at the main pool ruins your day.
Dreams Royal Beach Punta Cana The best value of all 21, and it isn’t close

- The evening shows are weak. Under-produced for adults
- The à la carte restaurants don’t match the buffet
- It’s a family resort. There are kids everywhere
What it’s actually like
Here’s the sentence that matters: €204 a night buys facilities, food and service that cost nearly double elsewhere in the same area. I’ve now compared it against twenty others and it still holds.
It’s also two hotels in one day. Daytime is a family paradise with the giant lazy river. Then the sun goes down, they light the tropical gardens, and walking through the palms after dinner was one of my favourite moments of the trip.
Unusually, the buffet beats the à la carte restaurants. Eat there and don’t feel bad about it.

Book it if you want to feel like you’re in a premium romantic resort without spending €500, and you don’t mind children being around: they’ll be in the lazy river. Skip it if you want a strict adults-only, or big-production nightly shows. For adults only at a similar price, ZEL.
ZEL Punta Cana by Meliá & Rafa Nadal 190 rooms. The only two 10s in my entire database

- Neguri, the beach restaurant: beef rib rice finished at your table
- Live-cooked pasta, the best buffet dish of the whole trip
- Bluetooth turntable in the room. Yes, really
- Real yoga and pilates, plus tennis and padel on the Meliá courts
- The Paradisus water park is included, a few minutes’ walk away
CONS
- Quiet at night. There is no party here
- Wrong choice if small children are your priority
- Beach and pools score 8, below the room
What it’s actually like
Of everything I saw in July 2026, this is the best value in the upper tier. It’s the room that does it. Kitchen-diner area, big living room, enormous terrace with a hot tub, and a bathroom I gave a straight 10.
The size explains the rest. With 190 rooms there are corners everywhere to sit without anyone on top of you, and the aesthetic mixes Caribbean with Mediterranean without shouting about it.
Check-in is done sitting down, with a drink, while they explain the hotel. It sets the tone.

Book it if you’re a couple who wants to rest, eat well and do yoga or padel, or a family with older kids who’ll use the sports. Skip it if you have toddlers, and go to Meliá Caribe next door instead, or if you want nightlife: Royalton CHIC.
Meliá Punta Cana Beach Wellness Inclusive The best food in Punta Cana, and the quietest resort

- Eggs Benedict with salmon and real hollandaise, made to order. Proper jamón ibérico. Spinach crêpes. I have not found this breakfast anywhere else in the Caribbean.

- Dinner is city-restaurant standard, not hotel standard
- The gardens have peacocks, ducks and lakes. It’s an ecosystem
- Chill-out music at the pools. Nobody shouting into a microphone
- Rituals amenities, and the room smells fresh, not shut up
- Wellness Inclusive is real: yoga, meditation, bikes, cooking classes
CONS
- The bed is a 7. Fine, but ordinary for the price
- Long, thin layout. Walking it at midday means sweating
- Bad hairdryer. Bring your own if it matters
- No nightlife whatsoever
- Dinners must be booked 24 hours ahead
What it’s actually like
This is the resort I recommend when someone says they want silence. Adults only of the genuine-rest kind, not the adults-party kind. It’s the exact opposite of Breathless and Royalton CHIC.
The food is the reason to come. Go safe on proteins, the fish, meat and tartares are where it shines. The elaborate pasta dishes are a coin flip depending on how full the restaurant is: I ordered prawn pasta once and it arrived without the prawns.
Ask at check-in about the YHI Spa. On longer stays they sometimes give you the water circuit for free.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if you’re a couple who cares more about eating well than anything else, or you’re escaping noise. Skip it if you have mobility problems, because the distances are long, or if you want any kind of night out. Same money, more life: Breathless.
RIU Palace Bávaro Water park, pool parties and the best beach on this list

- A coconut forest that reaches almost to the shoreline, so there’s natural shade for everyone and no fighting over parasols.

- Splash Water World is inside the hotel, 3 minutes from the lobby
- Real slides: Kamikaze and Body Whirl, and no crazy queues
- The RIU Party is a full festival, 2pm to 7pm, buses every 10 minutes
- Wall dispenser in the room with four premium spirits
- “Friends & Family” rooms have three real Queen beds
- The Steakhouse Rib Eye is a 10. I still think about it
CONS
- Getting a coffee at breakfast can be a mission. Staff scored 6.5
- The italian’s pasta was soft, not al dente
- Too much going on for a quiet honeymoon
What it’s actually like
The full refurbishment in late 2024 absorbed the old RIU Naiboa and turned this into a machine. If you’ve seen old photos with dark colonial furniture, delete them. The rooms are bright and there’s no smell of age.
What surprised me is that the party zone sits away from the room blocks. You can sleep through the afternoon and hear nothing at all. Party when you want it, silence when you need it.
One practical note: wear a rash guard on the fastest slides. You feel the joins on the way down.

Book it if you have kids who’ll live in the water park while you take the beach, or you’re a group of friends who’ll use the RIU Parties. Skip it if you expect a waiter to read your mind. For the same park at a lower price, RIU Bambú next door, with a much worse room.
Hideaway at Royalton Punta Cana An adults-only bubble inside a family resort

- Three atmospheres within a few metres: the walled Hideaway to hide in, the sociable main Royalton pool, and the Splash water park a 5-minute shuttle away.

- The Rib Eye at Dorado was the best steak of the entire trip
- Serrano ham carved to order at the buffet
- The best beds and pillows of all 21, with a pillow menu
- Buffet desserts that are low in sugar and still good
- Adult nightlife starts exactly when the kids’ programme ends
CONS
- The Diamond Club butler wasn’t worth it. We did everything ourselves
- A sea wall breaks the infinite-beach look and eats sand
- Some evening shows feel childish for an adults-only crowd
- The bathroom is where the age shows
What it’s actually like
The concept is a resort inside a resort, and it’s poorly explained everywhere online. You sleep in a walled, quiet adults-only enclave and still have the full social resort next door, plus the water park.
The honest comparison I can give you is this: the quality jump from the Hideaway, a 5-star, over the Splash, a 4-star, is in the food. At the Splash it’s fine. At the Hideaway it’s spectacular. If budget rules and the kids are the priority, the Splash does the job.
If you do have the budget, choose Royalton Punta Cana. It’s a very good option and the food is among the best I’ve had in Punta Cana.

Book it if you’re a foodie couple who wants quiet without being trapped in a dull hotel, or a family that wants both worlds. Skip it if you’re a beach purist, because of the wall, or if you were counting on the butler.
Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana The best atmosphere for kids in the whole area

What it’s actually like
They’ve pulled off something difficult: a playground for children where adults don’t feel they’re trapped in a giant soft-play. The luxury is real, not just themed.
You are paying a lot for the brand and the theming. If your kids won’t use the characters or the water park, the price feels absurd. If they’re 3 to 12 and they’re fans, their faces are worth it.
Use the app for character schedules. We ran into Patrick wandering the plaza without trying, but the timings let you plan the surprise.

Book it for kids aged 3 to 12 who know the shows, and if you want fresh food rather than a mediocre buffet. Skip it if the beach is your priority, if you hate depending on buggies, or if you’re travelling without children. Same idea, half the price: Meliá Caribe.
Dreams Cap Cana Resort & Spa The cheap way into the most expensive area in the country

- Its neighbours in Cap Cana charge €500 to €1,000 a night. This is the same private, gated, immaculate area for €319.

- Staff scored 9.5. Luis Abreu behind the bar is an artist
- Proper craft cocktails, and they’ll make what isn’t on the menu
- A swing bar inside the main pool
- Hammocks on sand inside the grounds, in natural tree shade
- The gym has leg machines, a Smith machine, TRX and a punchbag
- Ten minutes from the airport. No hour-long transfer
CONS
- In October the sargassum hit hard and the sand wasn’t cleaned enough
- Teenagers get bored. No big slides, no teen scene
- The lunch buffet rotates too little
- A cleaner refused to open our room when the key failed
What it’s actually like
Cap Cana is a private zone with its own security and immaculate beaches, and it prices accordingly. This is the door in. What makes the difference here isn’t the building, it’s the people.
Everything is close together: a minute to the pools, a minute to reception, three to the beach and three to the restaurants. After the walking involved in Meliá and Nickelodeon, that matters more than it sounds.
The spa’s basic circuit is worth doing even if you’ve never been to one. Cold plunges, saunas, hot tubs, and you come out floating.

Book it if you want luxury and exclusivity under €600 a night, you’re a couple or a family with small children, and you care about how staff treat you. Skip it if you have teenagers who need constant action, or if you need a sargassum-free beach in low season: Arena Gorda is cleaner.
Wyndham Alltra Punta Cana A family resort that doesn’t feel like one

- The water park sits at the back and takes all the noise with it. The smartest layout I’ve seen for stopping a family hotel from feeling like one.
PROS
- They let you ride the slides with your child. Most resorts forbid it
- The buffet Rib Eye beats themed restaurants at other hotels
- A pool so long it takes 5 to 10 minutes to swim its length
- They kept food quality in low season with about 50 guests
- Wood-fired pizzas and proper patisserie desserts
- Uber does come into this hotel, whatever they tell you
CONS
- Barely any activities in low season. That’s what drags it to 8.5
- The water park snack bar shuts at 5pm, before the park does
- “La Brasa” gets hot. Poor ventilation
- Rooms feel tight with a family’s worth of luggage
What it’s actually like
The food was the biggest surprise of the whole trip: lunch and dinner both scored 9. They didn’t drop standards with a nearly empty hotel, which tells you more about management than any brochure.
The reception smells incredible, which sounds like nothing and changes your mood as you walk in. The Sport Bar is probably the best-decorated room I saw in Punta Cana.
Practical tip: on the red slide, wear a rash guard. It’s pure speed and you feel the joins on your back.

Book it if you’re a couple who doesn’t want to pay the adults-only premium, or a family that wants slides and real calm in the same day. Skip it if you’re travelling in low season and need a full activity programme, or if you need a big room. Better value nearby: Dreams Royal Beach.
Meliá Caribe Beach Resort The best resort in Punta Cana for children aged 1 to 8

- The kids’ club takes children from age 1 without a parent staying, split into 1-4 and 5-12. You can leave a toddler and go for lunch. Almost nowhere else does this.

- Three levels of children’s pool, graded by age
- No strict height rule on the small slides: if they swim, they slide
- Kids’ club has a cinema and a room with cots for naps
- Extra beds are real beds, not a bad sofa bed
- The Dominican restaurant was the best meal of the stay
- Far fewer mosquitoes than at other resorts
CONS
- A full day with no hot water in one of our rooms
- In July the sargassum is bad enough to put you off swimming
- Desserts are the weak point. Dry and bland
- You can’t book à la carte restaurants on check-in day
- Very long resort: 10 minutes’ walk from lobby to beach rooms
What it’s actually like
This is the family version of Meliá Punta Cana Beach, right next door, same aesthetic, opposite audience. Of all 21 resorts, it’s the most complete for small children, and the kids’ club is why.
It’s also calm rather than chaotic, which is rare in a family resort of this size. The gardens are enormous, with paths through the vegetation and peacocks and ducks wandering loose.
The beach is one of the prettiest in this part of Bávaro and genuinely wide, with natural shade, volleyball nets and football goals. Security staff patrol it, which keeps sellers away.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if you have children between 1 and 8. That’s its absolute strength and nothing else here beats it. Skip it if you’re a couple, and cross to Meliá Punta Cana Beach next door, or if your kids are 10 to 12 and want big slides: RIU Palace Bávaro.
Catalonia Royal Bávaro Adults Only À la carte dinners I scored a 9, at €181 a night

- I gave the food a 9. I almost never give a 9 to food. At this price that is the single best thing on this whole page.

- A pata negra ham station at breakfast, carved to order
- They wheel the dessert trolley over so you see the cake first
- Free golf lessons with Ernesto, inside the hotel
- Two pools: one with music, one silent with Balinese beds
- Live piano bar, the best thing about the evenings
- Three minutes from lobby to beach. No buggy needed
CONS
- The beach is the weak point: narrow, and July sargassum
- The room badly needs updating. Furniture and lamps look tired
- Lunch is the weakest meal. Fine, not memorable
- The steakhouse was full every single day. We never got in
- No Smart TV, and the aircon is noisy at full power
What it’s actually like
This is the low-expectations, pleasant-surprise case of the trip. A small, manageable adults-only in Cabeza de Toro where the dinners are on a level with the best I’ve eaten in the Caribbean, at a mid-range price.
A detail that says it all: I left a tip after one dinner. In Spain we don’t do that unless the service really stands out. I walked out thinking that meal would cost me €100 in Madrid.
The staff are professional rather than jokey, and that’s worth a lot. In the restaurants there are enough waiters per table to notice an empty glass.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if you want to rest and eat extremely well without paying top prices, and a piano bar sounds better than a nightclub. Skip it if a perfect Caribbean beach is your number one priority: go to Arena Gorda or La Romana instead.
Royalton CHIC Punta Cana An Ibiza beach club dropped into the Caribbean

- Many rooms have a big hot tub right next to the bed. Not in the bathroom, not on the terrace. Next to the bed.
PROS
- The Mermaid Pool is raised on the first floor with glass walls
- The resident DJ reads the room. Chill-out when it fits, hits when it doesn’t
- Free weights in the gym: squat and deadlift bars, not just cardio
- Tandori, the Indian restaurant, was the best dinner
- The lounge café is open almost 24 hours
- Average age 40 to 55. Social, not a student blowout
CONS
- The Diamond Club butler added nothing. Slow and unhelpful
- Nearly an hour waiting for starters at the Japanese, and weak sushi
- The buffet is small and repeats if you eat there every night
- No natural shade on the beach. It’s parasol or nothing
- The spa is pretty but basic, and the sauna wasn’t hot
What it’s actually like
“Party Your Way” is the slogan and it’s accurate, but not the way you’d assume. This is elegant socialising, not a student blowout. The average guest is in their forties.
The one piece of advice I’d give: pay for the Diamond Club for the facilities, not the butler. It gets you into the Mermaid Pool and the best beach and pool zones. The butler service isn’t worth a cent.
The entertainment team invites you to the themed parties and then respects a no, which is rarer than it should be.

Book it if you’re 35 to 55, you want atmosphere and good music, and you rate the room above everything else. Skip it if you want peace and quiet, because music is this hotel’s DNA, or if you’re a sushi purist. Quiet at a similar price: Meliá Punta Cana Beach.
Sunscape Dominicus La Romana The best beach of all 21, at the lowest 4-star price

- It’s on the south coast, so the sun sets over the sea and there’s far less sargassum. On the Punta Cana coast neither of those things happens.

- Clean, sargassum-free beach even in low season
- The sea is like a swimming pool. Safe for small kids
- No queues at the water park. I went down five times in a row
- The buffet has a kid-height stand with their favourites
- The entertainment team is the engine of the hotel
- Homemade buffet pizzas that are genuinely good
CONS
- No restaurant bookings. Eat at 6.30pm or queue up to an hour
- Rooms get tight with an extra bed
- Bring mosquito spray. You’ll need it in the gardens
- The evening shows are thin for adults
- Bar sandwiches are all bread. The food truck chips were bad
- An hour from the airport, and no lifts in the buildings
What it’s actually like
It isn’t in Punta Cana. It’s in Bayahíbe, on Playa Dominicus, an hour away. That single fact is why it’s here: the south coast gets far less seaweed, and the sunset happens over the water.
It’s a 4-star and it doesn’t pretend otherwise. What it does is put the money into the things that make a holiday feel good, and it’s the best value of the whole trip.
The gardens have real wildlife: woodpeckers, herons, a pond with fish and turtles. Small thing, and you notice it every day.

Book it if you want smart savings with a water park and a genuinely safe beach, or you’re a young couple on a budget who wants the sunsets. Skip it if you want luxury, modern facilities or high-end food, or if you won’t eat dinner early. At this budget in Bávaro: Occidental.
Grand Sirenis Punta Cana Resort & Aquagames A big water park attached to a 4-star room

- Big water park, and the pools are good
- The main evening show is properly done
CONS
- Basic 4-star room service: no slippers, tired hairdryer
- Weak shower pressure, and hot and cold are swapped over
- The water park needs repainting. It looks better in photos
- Food is fine and nowhere near 5-star

What it’s actually like
I’ll be blunt, because this is the shortest entry on the page for a reason: after a stay here I have far less to tell you than about any of the other twenty. That’s the finding.
Nothing is bad. The bed is genuinely great, the staff are good, the beach is clean. But at €284 a night the room feels like a four-star and the food follows it, and I couldn’t find the thing that makes it worth choosing.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if you find a real bargain and you want a big water park for the kids. Skip it at anything close to full price. At €204, Dreams Royal Beach gives you more of everything, and it also has slides.

- The Boulevard: 30,000 m² of casino, bowling, arcade, theatre and club
- The Panchi kids club has its own theatre inside it
- Teenagers get their own zone, “Vibe”, with consoles and foosball
- Rooms built in 2019, not refurbished. Sofa bed you can sleep on
CONS
- Waiters shouting at each other across the buffet, in front of guests
- A long power cut. We ate lighting our plates with phone torches
- Nobody explained anything or offered anything afterwards
- Food below cheaper 5-stars on this list, at the highest price
- It feels like a Dubai resort. You’re a room number
- The water park is for under-12s. No fast slides for teens
What it’s actually like
This is the only resort here where I’d tell you the photos are completely accurate and still not go back. Everything you can build with money is here. Everything that depends on a person went wrong.
One exception worth naming: Feliz, the sommelier at the wine cellar, and his tasting. He single-handedly rescued the service score, and he’s in the photos above for a reason.
Practical tip: ask for a room facing the gardens. Ours looked out over an empty lot on the outside of the building.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if your kids are under 12 and facilities are what you’re buying, or if you train and the gym decides your holiday. Skip it if five stars means being treated by name. For the same money, Nickelodeon does families properly, and Dreams Royal Beach matches it for half.
RIU Bambú The best parties in Punta Cana, the worst room of the 21

- The RIU Parties are a 10, and I liked them more than Coco Bongo in Cancún. Almost a festival: DJ, dancers, foam cannons and unlimited drinks.

- The cleanest water I’ve seen in Punta Cana, checked across two seasons
- Huge beach with masses of natural shade
- Food well above what the price suggests. Very good pancakes
- Activities from 10am to 11pm, so many they overlap
- €176 a night, the cheapest 5-star of the July 2026 trip
CONS
- The room looks like a 3-star. It needs urgent renovation
- Bugs in the corridor, a drain smell in the bathroom, towels that smelled
- Three sockets in total, none by the bed
- The aircon blows straight at the bed and won’t hold a temperature
- À la carte restaurants can’t be booked. First come, limited covers
- The spirits aren’t branded. Own-label or house brands
What it’s actually like
This resort has exactly one profile: you come for the RIU Parties. The gap between the resort and the bedroom is the biggest I found anywhere, and it’s the whole story of the place.
Common areas and gardens are well kept. The beach is one of the best in Punta Cana. Then you open your door and it’s a seventies beach house that was never finished.
Here’s the cleanest comparison in my entire database: €176 here, €180 at the Impressive Premium, €181 at the Catalonia, all in the same trip. Scores 7.7, 7.5 and 8.3.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if you’re a couple, a group of friends or a family with older kids coming for the party, on a mid-to-low budget. Skip it if you want quiet, rest or a nice room. With small children, RIU Palace Bávaro next door shares the same park and the same beach.
Impressive Premium Punta Cana It’s a 7.5 that looks like an 8 on the booking sites

- They fumigate, so there are far fewer mosquitoes
- Wide beach, lots of natural shade and loungers to spare
- Most pools have entry ramps instead of ladders
- Works for a group of friends: white party, foam party, sports bar
CONS
- Staff are the weakest part. I scored them a 6
- The quiet Premium pool had hairs, drowned insects and grime
- The mattress is far too soft. Two people and it sinks
- The Mexican restaurant is a 5 out of 10, being generous
- Nobody explained how Premium worked at check-in
- Room service costs about $10 unless you’re Premium
What it’s actually like
This hotel lives or dies on the price you pay. Pretty, big Premium room, wide beach, good gym, and then irregular service and pools that should be skimmed during the day.
The problem I’d flag is the “it’s coming” problem. We waited ten minutes for a buggy after eight hours of flying and nearly three in a taxi. The wait wasn’t the issue: being told “it’s coming” instead of “ten minutes, he’s dropping other guests off” was.
One more: in a yoga class they let an 8-year-old lead the whole session because she wants to be a yoga teacher. It became PE stretching. Let her assist and everyone wins.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if you find it clearly cheaper than the tier above, or you want a big room without overpaying. Skip it if you can pay the same for Meliá Punta Cana Beach or Wyndham Alltra, or if the kids are the point: there’s no water park here.

- We booked it specifically to find out whether the cheapest all-inclusive in Punta Cana was a disaster. It isn’t. It’s exactly what it costs.

- The entertainer is the best employee in the building
- Walking distance to the best beach in the area, in front of Meliá
- Next to shops, restaurants and bars, and a good base for Coco Bongo

CONS
- Shower water comes out warm, never properly hot
- Comfortable mattress, bad pillow
- Long queues at the cocktail bar
- You have to book restaurants and reception doesn’t tell you
- Friendliness is not this staff’s strength
- The bathroom needs work, and some areas need maintenance
What it’s actually like
This is a 3-star and it never pretends otherwise, which is exactly why it scores the same as the Occidental, a hotel that puts five stars on the door. Go in with realistic expectations and it delivers more than you paid for.
The thing that surprised me most was the food. After a month of moving from resort to resort and trying to eat sensibly, I still went back for seconds at that buffet. Don’t expect restaurant plating, but it works.

Book it if the budget is tight, or you want a cheap base for cocktails, pool and nights out. I’d only recommend it at around this price. Skip it if you expect any kind of five-star service. For €18 more, Occidental puts you on a far better beach.
Occidental Punta Cana One of the best beaches in Bávaro, for a third of the price

- €140 while its Bávaro neighbours were charging €267 to €426 on the same dates. Against the Lopesan that isn’t half, it’s a third. And it’s beachfront.
PROS
- Cleaner of sargassum than luxury hotels nearby on the same dates
- The spa is the one thing here that feels genuinely upmarket
- A second big pool, quiet, that almost nobody uses
- The crêpe lady saves the food. Worth the two-minute queue
- Our refurbished room had two big beds and two sofa beds
CONS
- The buffet is a 6 out of 10 being generous. I’ve eaten better for less
- Breakfast orange juice is syrup, water and sugar
- Nobody offers you a drink at the table. You chase waiters
- At the à la carte restaurants you fetch your own starters from a buffet
- The room was refurbished, the building wasn’t. Corridors leak
- The wifi is a disaster, and room service costs extra
What it’s actually like
It says five stars on the entrance and the real experience is a basic four. You pay half and the quality halves too. Knowing that in advance, it delivers. Not knowing it, it’s frustrating.
What you’re buying is the beach and the price. The sand is wide, the sea is perfect for swimming, and it stayed cleaner than resorts charging three times as much on the same dates.
If you want it to actually feel like a five-star, the Royal Level supplement is what does it: private pool, its own à la carte restaurant and a reserved stretch of beach.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it if price comes first and you want to be on a great beach, and you’re not fussy about food. Skip it if you love eating, because you will suffer. For €14 less and a better standard overall, Sunscape Dominicus, an hour further out.

- Kids’ facilities score 8.5 and the pools 8.5. Staff score 4.0, the lowest number anywhere in my database. Everything on this page follows from those two facts.
PROS
- About eight separate water areas. Genuinely the best thing here
- Tall slides, mini slides, a river pool and splash zones
- Main pool with volleyball, inflatables and a Ninja Warrior course
- The kids’ club has a cinema, a theatre and a PlayStation room
- A separate teen zone with pool, table tennis and consoles
- The 24-hour gym is the best-kept facility in the hotel
CONS
- Two and a half hours to have dinner, between queue and service
- Restaurants closed while the open ones had 90-minute waits
- They gave us a room with people already inside it
- A call at 11.45pm claiming we hadn’t paid. We had
- In July the sargassum smelled. The water looked brown
- No gel in one room, and sugar sachets instead of coffee
What it’s actually like
Fair warning on the photos: this is the only resort on the page where I have nothing usable to show you yet. I’m not going to borrow the hotel’s press shots to fill the gap, because the whole point of this page is that the pictures are mine.
The diagnosis is simple. It’s a huge, very popular family resort, and management is running behind what it has to handle. With high occupancy and not enough staff, everything fails in a chain: check-in, rooms, restaurants, restocking, bars.
And the part that stings: we paid more here than at five-star resorts we liked considerably more. It fills up, so the price goes up, because they know they’ll sell it.
Book it if, skip it if
Book it only if you find it around $100 a night below the competition and you’re coming purely for pools and slides. Skip it if the difference against another hotel is $40 to $60: take the other one without thinking. Skip it for the beach, especially in summer, and skip it entirely as a couple. Same area, far better: Catalonia Royal Bávaro.

About the prices. These are what I actually paid, in low season, converted at roughly $1.15 to the euro. They’re a floor, not a quote: between December and April the same rooms cost substantially more. Two resorts have no figure: RIU Palace Bávaro was a hosted stay, and at Sunscape Coco I didn’t keep the exact rate, only the fact that it came to more than five-star hotels I liked a lot better.
Ten more resorts people ask me about, and what I can honestly tell you
These names come up in every message I get about Punta Cana. None of them is in the ranking above, because I haven’t slept in any of them, and the only thing that makes this page worth reading is that I slept in the other twenty-one.
So here’s what I actually know, split into the ones I can tell you something real about and the ones I can’t.
Four I’ve genuinely seen, from the resort next door
Secrets Royal Beach
The adults-only next door to Dreams Royal Beach, my number 3. The two share a nightclub and you get to it without leaving the complex, which I used and can confirm.
So if you’re a couple who wants the Dreams standard without children around, this is the same operator, the same beach and the same nightlife. What I can’t give you is a score, because I slept on the family side.
Paradisus Punta Cana
Here’s the thing almost nobody mentions when comparing these hotels: staying at ZEL, my number 4, gets you the Paradisus water park and the Fun Republic included, a few minutes’ walk away.
That matters if you’re weighing up Paradisus for a family. You may be able to book ZEL, sleep in a much better room, and still use the facilities you were going there for.
Princess: I had the Caribe Deluxe booked and it sold out
I had it ready to book for July 2026 and by the next day there was no availability, so I booked elsewhere. I wanted to check whether it’s really as good as its value-for-money ratings suggest, because that combination usually hides a catch.
On the record, from research and not from a stay: water park and children’s pools, direct access to Bávaro beach, a full activity programme, and an online rating of 8.6. It stays on my list.
Barceló
I haven’t stayed in a Barceló-branded hotel in Punta Cana, but I did sleep at the Occidental Punta Cana, which belongs to Barceló Hotel Group, and I scored it 6.9.
What that stay taught me about the group’s positioning here: the beaches they hold are excellent and the price is genuinely low, and the food is where the money isn’t going. Worth knowing before you assume the brand guarantees a standard.
Six I have not stayed in, and won’t pretend otherwise
Majestic, Iberostar, Hard Rock, Bahia Principe, Excellence and TRS. I have no score for any of them and I’m not going to invent one.
The only first-hand thing I can offer is a comparison I made from another resort’s beach: at that level, for beaches, Meliá, Secrets and Excellence are a step above Nickelodeon. That’s an observation about sand, not a review of a hotel.
These six are the shortlist for my next trip. When I’ve slept in them and paid for them, they’ll move up into the ranking with a number, like the other twenty-one. Until then they stay down here, where they belong.
My picks, if you just want to be told
If you’ve read this far and you’re still torn, this is what I’d say to a friend on WhatsApp, no hedging.
8.8 out of 10 for €204. Nothing else on this list gets close on that ratio.
9.4. The safest bet in Punta Cana, and the only breakfast I’ve scored a 10.

The questions I get asked most
Which is the best all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana?
Of the 21 I’ve slept in, Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, with 9.4 out of 10. It’s adults only and costs upwards of $600 a night in low season. If you want the best hotel per euro rather than the best hotel outright, it’s Dreams Royal Beach, which scored 8.8 at €204.
Which area of Punta Cana should I stay in?
Bávaro is the most balanced: most resorts, good beach, 25 to 35 minutes from the airport. Uvero Alto is quieter and more spread out, 45 minutes away, and it’s where the big family and adults-only resorts sit. Cap Cana is the gated luxury zone, 10 to 15 minutes from the airport. Arena Gorda had the cleanest water I saw across two seasons. Cabeza de Toro has the weakest beach of the five. And La Romana is a different coast entirely, an hour out, with the least sargassum.
Is a more expensive resort actually better in Punta Cana?
Not reliably, and this page is the evidence. The most expensive stay I paid for was Lopesan at €422, and it scored 7.8. Dreams Royal Beach at €204 scored 8.8. Price predicts the facilities well and the service badly, and service is what you remember.
Which resort has the best food?
Meliá Punta Cana Beach for breakfast and overall, and Hyatt Zilara if you can afford it: it’s the only breakfast I’ve ever scored a 10. The best food per euro is Catalonia Royal Bávaro, where I gave the à la carte dinners a 9 at €181 a night. For a single dish, the Rib Eye at Dorado in the Hideaway.
When is the sargassum worst?
June and July are the peak. December to April is the clean window. In July 2026 it was worse than on my October 2025 trip, and that isn’t bad luck: according to the Optical Oceanography Lab at the University of South Florida, June 2026 hit the highest levels ever recorded for that month in the Caribbean. Least affected on this list: Arena Gorda and La Romana. Worst: Cabeza de Toro, where at Sunscape Coco you could smell it.
Is it worth paying for Diamond Club, Elite Club, Preferred or Royal Level?
My answer after four different hotels is the same every time: pay for the facilities, not for the butler. At Royalton CHIC the Diamond Club gets you the glass-walled Mermaid Pool and the best beach zones, and the butler added nothing. At the Hideaway the butler failed too. At Occidental, Royal Level is genuinely what takes it from four stars to five.
Which resorts have a water park?
Eleven of the ones I’ve stayed in, and some of them share one: from RIU Bambú it’s a 5 to 7 minute walk to the RIU park, from the Hideaway the Splash park is a 5-minute shuttle, ZEL guests use the Paradisus one, and Breathless guests reach the Dreams Onyx park indoors. I go through all of them, slide by slide, in my Punta Cana water park guide.
How do you work out the scores?
Each resort gets scored across fourteen categories after the stay: cleanliness, bed, bathroom, room size, breakfast, buffet, lunch, dinner, all-inclusive, pools, adult facilities, kids’ facilities, staff and beach. The number you see is the overall score, and it’s based on quality, not on price. That’s why Occidental gets 6.9 despite being a bargain, and why the same 6.9 goes to a 3-star.
How this guide is paid for
Transparency, which is the only reason any of this is worth reading: I use affiliate links. They cost you nothing extra and they help pay for the hotels. Of the 21 resorts here, I paid for 20. The single hosted stay was RIU Palace Bávaro, flagged on its own card, and that’s why you won’t see a price on it.
It’s also why there are 6.9s and a 6.7 on this page. I’m not going to inflate a score for a hotel I paid for out of my own pocket. The list said 14 a few months ago and says 21 today, and every new stay gets added whether it flatters the ranking or not.
