Where to Stay in Segovia and the Areas You Should Avoid

I recommend spending at least five minutes reading this guide so you don’t end up booking a “nice-looking” hotel in an area that’s sketchy or simply not a good fit for the kind of trip you want.

In each area, I’ll briefly explain who I recommend it for (families, young couples, older couples, solo travelers, etc.)

And then I’ll share a list of what I consider the best value-for-money places to stay.

I’ll try not to overwhelm you with unnecessary details and focus only on what truly matters in each neighborhood: where to stay, what to see, and where to eat.

If you still have questions, you can leave a comment at the end of the article and I’ll be happy to help.

Best Areas to Stay in Segovia

Alcazar de Segovia descubriendo viajes - Cristina Gomez

Segovia is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s perfect for a getaway, whether you're traveling as a couple or with family. You’ll enjoy its history, architecture, and incredible food.

When planning a trip, choosing the right area to stay in is key, and Segovia has neighborhoods that are perfect for exploring the city, as well as others that aren’t really worth it. In this guide, I’ll show you the best options.

To make things easier for travelers, I’ve narrowed it down to the 4 best areas to stay in Segovia:

1. The Old Town (the historic heart of the city)
2. The Jewish Quarter (the most medieval area)
3. San Marcos (with views of the Alcázar and nature)
4. Nearby towns: La Granja de San Ildefonso

1. The Old Town: in my opinion, the best area to stay in Segovia

The Old Town is convenient for travelers who want to fully experience the essence of Segovia, as it is the monumental heart of the city.

Here you’ll find the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, and the impressive Roman aqueduct, the city’s most iconic landmark.

The center is also where most restaurants, bars, shops, cafés, and hotels are located.

It’s definitely one of my favorite areas to stay. Whether you’re traveling as a couple or with family, it’s ideal for sightseeing. Segovia is a small city and very easy to explore on foot, so staying in the center makes everything even more convenient.

If you’re traveling by car, it’s best to leave it at your hotel or in one of the public parking lots in the center. Since this is a medieval city, you’ll find some steep streets, narrow cobblestone roads, and many pedestrian-only areas.

For food, and as you might expect, I strongly recommend trying Segovia’s famous roast suckling pig. I’ve eaten at several restaurants in the city center and, without a doubt, one of my favorites is El Sitio. The food is excellent and the staff are friendly and welcoming.

Important: Make a reservation in advance. Finding a place to eat in Segovia without booking ahead, especially on weekends, can be quite difficult.

🏨 Recommended Hotels in The Old Town

Here’s a list of highly rated hotels in the Old Town. It’s the area I recommend the most. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll be happy to help.

If you prefer recommendations based on our own experience in Segovia, here are the three best places to stay in the Old Town, depending on your budget.

  • Hostería Natura: (around €50/night, affordable, central, and with family rooms. I stayed here with my kids and the experience was great.)
  • Hotel Infanta Isabel: (from €65/night, located right on Plaza Mayor and with excellent reviews.)
  • Aurea Convento Capuchinos: (around €120/night, right in the center, rated 9.1/10, and a 5-star hotel. Perfect for a romantic getaway.)

2. The Jewish Quarter: the most medieval area of the city

The Jewish Quarter is one of the most charming areas of the city. It’s located just south of the Cathedral, still within the old city walls. I recommend it for couples or families looking for a quieter area without giving up the convenience of being in the city center.

This neighborhood has kept much of its medieval character and is home to interesting museums such as the Jewish Quarter Educational Center (a must if you want to understand the history of Jews in Segovia) and the former Great Synagogue, which today is the Church of Corpus Christi.

Just a 7-minute walk from the Jewish Quarter, you’ll find one of the city’s most iconic landmarks: the Alcázar (a fortress that serves as the residence of a king or prince).

In my opinion, this fortress is a must-see. It looks like something straight out of a storybook: its medieval halls, the Tower of John II, the panoramic views… the whole place is simply breathtaking.

And if you’re traveling with kids, they will love it. Every time we visit the city, my children always ask to go back to the Alcázar!

After so much sightseeing, you’ll probably be hungry and there’s nothing better than trying Segovia’s most famous dish: roast suckling pig.

Although there are several highly recommended restaurants in Segovia (José María, Cándido…), my personal favorite is El Bernardino. You can choose between the set menu or à la carte, and a portion of suckling pig is usually around 26€.

🏨 Recommended hotels in the Jewish Quarter

Here’s a list of highly rated hotels in the Jewish Quarter. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll be happy to help.

If you prefer specific recommendations, here are the three best places to stay in the Jewish Quarter:

  • Guesthouse La Judería: (around 60€/night. A simple, budget-friendly hotel with an excellent location.)
  • Hotel Don Felipe: (about 60€/night. Great value for money and excellent reviews. Very close to the Alcázar, and it has triple rooms for families)
  • Hotel Spa Casa Mudéjar: (around 70€/night. A 15th-century building located on one of the main streets of the city. Charming rooms and an on-site spa. A highly recommended option for couples.)

3. San Lorenzo / San Marcos: the most affordable option for families

San Lorenzo and San Marcos are residential neighborhoods located outside the city walls. Even though they’re not in the center, they’re a very good option for couples or families looking for quiet areas to stay.

San Lorenzo is a bit closer to the walls. Its streets are peaceful, and it’s home to landmarks such as the Church of San Lorenzo.

As for San Marcos, it’s right next to it. If you’re traveling with kids, it’s definitely worth considering, as the San Marcos riverside area is perfect for walking, having a picnic, or letting children run around and play.

If you prefer specific recommendations, here are my two favorite apartments in this area:

  • El Mirador del Alcázar: (around 120€/night. Apartments with excellent reviews. A great option for families.)
  • Tu Casa San Marcos: (from 105€/night. Beautiful, spacious apartments with views of the Alcázar. Without a doubt, one of my favorite options in Segovia.)

Hotel San Antonio El Real: My personal recommendation, because I stayed 2 nights and I loved it

4. La Granja de San Ildefonso

La Granja de San Ildefonso is not a neighborhood of Segovia, but it definitely deserves its own section in this guide. It’s a small town located just 15 minutes from the city. The Spanish kings chose it as their summer residence, and even today it still preserves its regal charm.

I think it’s a perfect destination for a couples’ getaway or a family trip. If you’re visiting Segovia, a visit to La Granja is, in my opinion, a must.

Here you’ll find unique places such as the Royal Glass Factory. But without a doubt, the star of the town is the Royal Palace and its gardens. Both are part of Spain’s National Heritage Royal Sites and can be visited.

There is an entrance fee to visit the Royal Palace (I recommend checking the National Heritage website because there are free entry options), while the gardens can also be visited for free.

I recommend visiting the gardens in spring or summer, when everything is greener, there are more flowers, and the fountains are operating. In autumn, with the fall colors, they’re beautiful as well.

Tip: check the fountain schedule on the National Heritage website. I visited the palace on a day when all the fountains were running, and it was stunning.

For food, here are my favorite restaurants: El Hábito Restaurant (don’t leave without trying the oxtail-stuffed potato) and Casa Zaca (their “judiones” bean stew will leave you speechless).

🏨 Recommended Hotels in la Granja de San Ildefonso

Parador de la Granja: My personal recommendation, because I stayed a night and I loved it.

This time, I’m once again recommending the hotel I personally chose. It’s the Parador de La Granja, located within the same complex as the Royal Palace.

It’s an ideal place for a romantic weekend getaway. The hotel offers different room types, some with mountain views (like the one in the photo).

I suggest booking with breakfast included, Paradores usually serve an abundant, high-quality buffet. The hotel also has its own restaurant with both set-menu and à la carte options.

If you’re visiting in summer, there’s a small rooftop pool, perfect for unwinding after a full day of sightseeing. And if you’re looking for an even more relaxing plan, you can book a spa session (the spa is not included in the room price).

5. Tips for Visiting Segovia

1. Best time to visit Segovia

The best seasons to visit Segovia are spring and autumn. Winters are quite cold, and summers can get very hot.

2. How to get around Segovia’s city center

The center is small and mostly pedestrian. It’s best to leave your car at the hotel or in one of the public parking lots.

3. How to get to Segovia

Take advantage of the high-speed AVE train from Madrid. From the train station, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the center by bus (line 12) or around 10 minutes by taxi (approximately 11€).

You can also drive, although you’ll need to park in a public lot or a bit outside the center.
